Average gain: 45 rwhp and 44 rwt
Working with noted Engine Builder Tony Bischoff of BES Racing Engines (Winner of the 2006 JEGS Engine Masters Challenge) we have developed a new line of 6.1L Ported and Polished Heads & Intake. With back to back dyno tests, we averaged gains of 45 rwhp and 44 rwt while achieving maximum gains of 49 rwhp all running cold (with airflow for cooling, approx. 180 degrees engine temp). Our heads are out-performing even our own expectations.
Here's the history:
1. Why BES?
Almost veryone in this market that produces P&P heads sends theirs out. It's standard. We went with BES because we've either installed all of the other distributors heads or we've worked/fixed cars that have others heads installed. We've seen the port jobs and we knew that there was a lot of room for improvement. If you didn't know it already, HHP is a full performance shop for the HEMI's. We install everything we sell and our main installers are all certified Chrysler A-Tech's who know these cars better than anyone else out there. Our Head Tech and HEMI expert, Bruce Maichle (Just click on his name for a link to his last race at Memphis where he set the Pro Stock series record at the last race of the season with a 8.64 1/4 mile) has been on the racing scene for years and only uses BES to build his race engines. If they're the only one he trusts to build $30k engines, then we knew they wouldn't steer us wrong. We've worked with them to develope a race port that is now proven to make more horsepower than anyone else and HHP is now proud to announce that we are the exclusive dealer of BES's product line for the new HEMI engines.
2. What's the deal with the test car?
The car used was a 2006 Dodge Charger SRT-8. The mods the car had on it were the following:
- DubAir Intake
- Magnaflow Cat-Back
- Magnaflow Catted Mid-Pipes
- GSM Torque & Fan Mod w/ 180 T-stat
- Jet Throttle Body Spacer
3. How was it dyno'd?
Since we know the dyno numbers will be picked apart, we'll have the dyno sheets up tomorrow. The baseline runs were made two weeks ago on the Dynojet, using 4th gear for the 1 to 1 ratio, and we maxed out the horsepower on the original runs at 365.37 rear wheel horsepower and 366.17 rear wheel torque. Very respectable numbers. The base run ambient temperature was two degrees cooler than the final dyno runs ambient temperature, and weather and atmospheric conditions overall were extremely close. The only additional part was that we turned the traction control off using the button inside the vehicle, holding for 8 seconds.
Initial Dyno Numbers
Average Output:
365.37 rwhp
366.17 rwt
Heat Soak Output: (no fans and 15 minutes idling to reach 220+ degrees)
349.35 rwhp
359.36 rwt
We removed the factory heads and intake and actually sent them to BES to be ported so we could put the same heads and intake back on this vehicle. That allowed for a little bit more control on the numbers. We received the heads and intake back, installed them, reset the memory using the StarScan and then I personally put close to 100 miles on the Charger in order to allow the computer to learn these new heads (the car will still learn for a few hundred more miles and the gains will probably increase since the air fuel was still 0.5 rich at 12.3).
The initial numbers were received using fans on the front of the Charger to keep the engine temperatures low. Here's the average and best:
Average Rear Wheel Output:
410.70 horsepower
410.46 torque
Maximum Horsepower Run:
413.99 horsepower (with 401.33 rwtq)
Heat Soak Output:
388.25 horsepower
376.69 torque
At full heat-soak we showed gains of 38 rear wheel horsepower and 24 rear wheel torque. Heat-soak numbers mean nothing since you will never run at these operating conditions but we use them to show what the absolute minimum gains are. That's an awesome gain at heat soak!
For all of our SRT-8 builds and installs, the best dyno output numbers we've had so far was 415 horsepower using a leading competitors heads but that SRT-8 also already had long-tubes, the PCM Flash, and the TCM (transmission Control Module). Based on our experience with these SRT-8's, our heads are producing at least 10 horsepower more than anyone elses.

Our 6.1L heads are now released to market and if you are interested, give us a call at 888-894-1115. We can install your heads and intake for you at an awesome price, too, and from the outside you can't tell that any work has been done to your vehicle. Dealerships cannot tell unless they break into the engine. If you are unable to get your SRT-8 to us we can ship our heads and intake to you in return for your stock heads and intake.
